Salpaus Further Education to organise the Taitaja Skills Competition in 2014

Salpaus Further Education will organise the Taitaja national skills competition in 2014. Salpaus will be hosting the competition at Lahti Fair Centre, the Suurhalli arena and the nearby campus of Salpaus between 8 April and 10 April 2014.

Finnish champions in more than 40 trades are decided at Taitaja, Finland's biggest annual event in vocational education. In addition, the competition features show events with a view to testing and developing new events before their adoption as competition events.

The competition will be attended by some 400 talented under-20s, including international guest competitors. The event will also include the TaitajaPLUS competition for vocational students with special needs and the Taitaja9 competition for ninth graders.

In terms of audience numbers, the target for Taitaja2014 is 35,000 visitors. Spectators have free entry to the competitions.

"The fact that we have been given the Taitaja competition is significant, as Salpaus can bring the whole education "arsenal" to one location during the competition. It is also one of the largest events in the Lahti Region in 2014," says Taitaja2014 competition director Jorma Noponen from Salpaus Further Education.

Cooperation with businesses

The Taitaja event is a major effort for the staff and students of Salpaus Further Education. The competition will be organised in cooperation with local businesses.

"Taitaja2014 will be a parade of national and local vocational education which will challenge the entire province and local businesses to get involved. Our aim is to promote awareness and develop vocational education in Finland, encourage young people, and improve their employment opportunities by bringing skilled individuals closer to employers," Noponen explains.

Partner institutes in some events include South Savo Vocational College, Kiipula Vocational College, Porvoo Vocational College, Helsinki Business College and Keuda Vocational College.

The background organisation is Skills Finland. The 2013 Taitaja event will be held in Joensuu.
